I was disappointed to find that intermediate space is no escape from extremes. In Vermont, I often shiver at the pump and think of how gas starts fires. A semi driver takes a nap, slumped against his truck, and awakes to a full tank. Calloused grips work machines that drill holes in monied ground, and in tall buildings there are firm shakes between smooth hands. The oil needn’t leave wallets to keep palms soft.
