During the last year that I lived in Providence, Rhode Island, I saw a lot of things on sidewalks that are rarely seen on sidewalks. A fish carcass outside my apartment. (That one was technically not on a sidewalk, but in a parking lot.) A baby shoe near my old psychiatrist’s office. Two stalks of asparagus along the massive hill up to the art building. I saw a few baseball caps. The most interesting thing about them were the slogans along the crown. My favorite: “Real Ol’ Perfection in Outdoor Living.”
