The aesthetic plainness of suburbia may be characterized by its homogenous housing developments, sure, while the historic, varied architecture of wealthy metropolitan neighborhoods serve as pleasing backdrops to portraits of “the family” families. But there is other plainness that troubles me, and there are other housing developments, and isn’t shelter plain? Plain like food and water and survival are plain.
